Coach & Horses, Whitstable

Dating back to the 17th Century, the Coach & Horses was originally the end house in a series of cottages. The interior is divided into a small and quite plain front bar with a modern with brick built bar, banquette seating and small round dimpled tables. The larger rear bar has a bit more character with book shelves, low ceilings, old pictures and a dart board. To the rear is a small walled courtyard patio. This is one of Whitstable’s many Shepherd Neame pubs so you won’t find much diversity across the ale pumps although the quality has always been fine and prices reasonable enough. Since my visits always coincide with the Oyster Festival, I always find the place heaving with Morris Dancers who regularly perform in the small adjacent square next to the pub. I wouldn’t imagine the place is particularly boisterous on normal days although they do have live music on occasions. It is a harmless enough place that does what it says on the tin and whilst we use it on the odd occasion as a time killer before heading to the station, I wouldn’t consider it a place that merits special attention.
