The Woolpack Inn, Witham

Very traditional and popular pub near the old parish church but away from the modern town centre on the other side of the station. Two cosy bars, with the pool room (with a display of soda fountains in the front window) up a single step on the right-hand side. A number of handpumps split between the two counters, but some of the cask ales may be served by gravity from the back room. Regular beers are Greene King IPA and No Name from Wharf (£3.30), with Lacons Norfolk Gem as the guest on my visit. NB - Doors at each end of the building, but don't try the middle one!

This is a pub in an old part of Witham called Chipping Hill. It's a lot closer to the station than the town centre which stretches along what was originally the A12. This is clearly an old pub, As you enter the door on the left side the bar is on the right and forwards of that is a darts area. The area around the bar is carpeted with beams across the ceiling and low tables and chairs. A corridor leads along the front of the pub to another small room with a pool room beyond that. The bar had four beers on, GK IPA, Mighty Oak Kings Citra Hop, Red Fox Mild and a beer called No Name by the Witham Brewery behind the pub. I went for the No Name (£2.70) which was in excellent condition and although a boring brown bitter had a very good hop flavour and was good value. This is a great little pub that is completely new to me and I would definitely return.
