The Stable Bar, Edinburgh

The family and I visited the Stable Bar a couple of times during a recent week long stay at the Mortonhall Caravan and Camping Park. The old stone stable has been converted into this bar and a few function / conference rooms that are available for hire. The buildings form a courtyard that is cobbled and houses a few picnic and café tables. Inside the bar there is a serving counter on the left wall that faces seating to the right, most of which was reserved for diners on both of our visits. We ate on the first night, the food was OK but not good enough to entice us back a second time. The burger was priced at £12. The bar supports three handpumps that were drawing Marston’s Pedigree alongside Stewart’s 80/- and Citra Blonde. The keg options were Brooklyn Pilsner, Estrella, Hobgoblin IPA, Guinness, Stewart’s Holyrood Ale and Somersby Cider. Next door to the bar is the split-level Saddle Room that has raised seating along the rear wall. This area was advertised as a function room. I found the service to be very hit and miss, and it was obvious some of the staff didn’t want to be there. As a campsite bar this place is above what you’d expect, but with a little tweaking it could be a very good bar in its own right. If I lived locally I wouldn’t come here.
