Wynnstay Arms Hotel, Machynlleth

This is a rambling hotel bar with various different rooms. These are furnished in a generally old fashioned but comfortable style, in fact it's a fairly typical old hotel. The serving area is roughly in the middle of it all with four hand pumps. Of these two were unused and two had the local Cwrw Cader Aur & Cwrw Coch. I went for the Cwrw Coch (£3.50) which was expensive but in reasonably good nick. Despite being a hotel bar this one is worth a look and is much improved on what I can recall from a visit around 20 years ago.

Imposing old hotel near the clock tower, with a porticoed entrance leading to the hotel lobby. Although not immediately obvious, the compact bar area is located on a diagonal route through one of several dining rooms. Although very much a hotel bar, I found two beers from Cwrw Cader - Cader Gold and Red Barron - plus Welsh Beacons from Brecon Brewing from three of four handpumps. Also noted were banners for a forthcoming beer and cider weekend, so they do take the good stuff seriously here.
