The Cottage Loaf, Llandudno

Certainly well utilised when I visited on a glorious weather Sunday lunchtime. The tables out front and in the garden area outback were well utilised and the pub was doing a good trade, and had a decent vibe about it. A row of five hand pumps on the bar and alongside the one dispensing the 6.5% Black Dragon Welsh Cider, was Courage Directors, Slaters Sorachi Ace, Welsh Pride from the Conwy Brewery and Our Ken from the Cottage Brewery, and the three regional ales we tried (yes, shock horror, we left the Directors alone) were well kept. We also ate here and the food and service levels were also very good. Would certainly concur with other reviewers that this seemed one of the better pubs in Llandudno on the experience of our fleeting visit and I certainly wouldn’t hesitate returning here when next in town.

This pub has one split level large room, pretty much all set up for dining on my visit. It was very quiet which made it lacking in atmosphere. The JDW next door was heaving as well. This could well be explained by the fact that I was charged over £3 for my pint whilst the JDW was charging £1.99. 4 handpumps on the bar selling Courage Directors, Conwy Welsh Pride and a couple of guests. The two beers I had were in decent nick and I also managed to win a couple of quid on the quiz machine on the upper level. It's listed in the GBG 2012 and will also be in the 2013 edition. It's a decent pub and hopefully next time I call in it will have more customers.

Visited a few times during a trip to Llandudno and on balance it was my favourite pub. Tucked away down a back street so probably doesn’t get much passing trade, the best way to give directions is that it’s next door to the back entrance to the Palladium, the Wetherspoons. The name is derived from the fact that the building was once a bakery and you can see some old oven doors embedded into the bar, not sure if they are originals. The pub also has some other historic features in that the structure includes parts of the masts of the Flying Foam, a schooner that was wrecked on the shores of Llandudno back in the 1930’s. The look is completed by a large inglenook fireplace. From the exterior the pub has a traditional cottage look to it painted bright white with some nice floral displays. There are a few tables and chairs out the front and a nice paved patio area at the back. As well as the main part of the bar there’s a raised area which I suspect is used for private functions or for the live music they host each weekend. There’s a good menu although the open kitchen does have a habit of setting off the fire alarm as it did on one of my visits. Beer wise there is a good choice with four hand pumps, Directors and local Welsh Pride looked to be regulars with changing guests on the other two. The pub is cask marque accredited and every pint I had there was in good condition. There are also a number of bottled beers and ciders. Service was friendly and efficient and it was easy to get into conversation with the locals. Highly recommended whether it be for a quiet afternoon pint or a convivial evening out.
