Royal Oak, York

They had three ales on – Landlord, Abbot, and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin. I had the Golden Pippin, which was excellent, and an ale that I had seen several times during my trip to York, but had never seen in London. This is another pub where the barmaid had never been asked to take her sparkler off before! The food seemed fairly reasonably priced - £7 - £9 for mains, and £4 - £5 for baguettes. This is a three-roomed pub, with what appeared to be a public bar at the front on the left; a snug on the right; and I guess what would be a saloon bar at the back. We popped in here for an early swift one, and sat in the public bar. This bar had an unusual feature (unusual for me anyway) of a pinkish stone/marble floor that has clearly been there a long time judging by the well worn oche facing the fireplace. The dartboard is no longer there, alas. The seating in here was red plastic covered banquettes, stools and metal framed tables. Quite traditional in fact. Despite its proximity to the Minster and Monk’s Bar, it still seems to be a fairly basic pub; there were two or three other punters in there who were clearly local regulars. I’d sum it up as a no-frills pub, and I would have no objection to making another visit, but there are several better pubs in York.
