Roebuck Inn, York

A gorgeous old Sam Smith's pub showing the better side of Humph's idiosyncrasies by being almost totally unspoilt. Features include a beamed ceiling, tiled floor and both a real fire and a range blazing away. You can forgive the handwritten 'no phone' notices by the pleasant chatter between the locals as they come in and are greeted by name. The only downside is a lack of cask ale, although the pretty full range of Sam Smith's beers on keg does not seem excessively gassed or too cold. With current opening only Thursday to Sunday it is probably justified. Definitely a step into the past.
