The Punch Bowl Inn, York

A nice if rather poshed-up old pub, retaining several separate rooms all opening onto the open plan bar. Very geared up for food but still welcoming to drinkers, and with plenty of space including a nice courtyard garden area behind. The ales were a little pedestrian, being York Guzzler and Theakstons Best, but were very well kept. The food is not cheap nor in particularly large portions but is very high quality.

A famous village pub, it's a multi room pub and restaurant with a snug, a public bar at the back, and a separate restaurant. It's dog and family friendly, serves meals at lunchtime and evenings and has its own car park. It also has free wifi but I couldn't get it to work. The tables in the snug and public bar are powered by massive church candles, the public bar has a brick built square bar, home to three handpumps on one face plus on a second face two apparantly only sometimes used. Black Sheep Bitter, Taylors Boltmaker and Rudgate Jorvik on sale on my visit. It has been restored after being owned by the infamous TV personalities, chef Richard Fox and actor Neil Morrisey, a period not without problems which now thankfully seem behind the pub now owned by rather up-market local chain Provenance Inns.

The classic British menus showcase the best local produce available from carefully selected suppliers, whilst the traditional bar is stocked with local beers, hand pulled ales and a considered wine list. The bar also accommodates informal dining, with large wooden tables and roaring open fires. 
 Located on the first floor, the private dining room and coffee lounge provide two separate, sumptuous spaces: ideal for drinks and lunch or dinner.
