As described below, this pleasant country pub is unspoilt despite the renovations; it has retained its character and has a pleasant, convivial atmosphere enhanced by an open fire in a Victorian fireplace. When we visited the garden was crammed full with transparent bubbles around benches and chairs for dining. The food was a little pricey but enjoyable. The staff were pleasant, helpful and welcoming. One ale on, Stonehenge Pigswill, which was sadly not in top condition. I’d be very happy to come back and eat, and hopefully the beer will be better next time.

The Rising Sun is situated well up Bowden Hill from the village of Lacock. Drinkers were being ushered towards the garden area, where there is an outdoor servery. It seemed a particular novelty to be able to order and retrieve your own beer from the bar! The solitary real ale was Plain Ales Innocence, whilst they no longer stock real cider. But views of the Avon Valley from the garden make a visit worthwhile.
