I'm not a fan of Brew York, mostly because of their excessive use of adjuncts, and even more excessive use of puns in naming their beers. But I have to say that their Micklegate Dark Mild 3.4% is very good indeed and in decent condition too (NBSS 3.5), which goes to show what you can do with just malt, hops and water if you stop thinking about puns for a couple of minutes. It's 12 years since my previous visit to Otley, and this pub seemed as familiar as any pub revisited after more than a decade is likely to be. It's in the Good Beer Guide, and is worth a visit for that alone, but it's perhaps not in quite the same class as one or two others.
