The Brewers 1841, Ossett

A bit of hike this one and to be honest I wasn’t expecting much on the approach as the immediate area hardly screams ‘passing trade’ and ‘lots of good quality ale’ – get your Googlemap man out to see what I mean. However there most certainly was plenty of beer to get stuck into – nine in total from far and wide – which were in good shaped and very competitively priced (all under £3pp) and spread over a wide range of styles, in good shape too. There were also some premium kegs like Hoegaarden and Fruili. The interior looks to have been refurbished in certain areas, such as the strange slate porch over the entrance to the toilets. Furnishing included padded (if somewhat worn-looking) banquettes, stools and benches. Décor-wise, there was a mish-mash of quarter-length wood panelling, dressed and undressed brickwork, coal fires and a wall covered in varnished-on newspaper clippings as well as plenty of brewerania. One slight criticism is that interior felt quite dark and could benefit from a bit more cosy light (artificial or otherwise). We ate here and I must say that the sausage and red wine casserole was the best pub food I have ever eaten for under a tenner. Absolutely first class. So, despite the unprepossessing location, this is a first-rate place and well-worth the trek to sample. A couple of interior touch-ups and I’d call this close to a 10.
