The Wike Horse, Heckmondwike

A town centre pub with a modernised interior but not heartlessly. Standard L shape with a broader area at the rear end of the long arm housing a pool table and darts. The counter is down one side of the long arm and has four T-bars stuffed in, all the usual down market kegs available including the seemingly evergreen John Smith’s Smooth, of course it is a Stonegate pub. The front right room retains a modicum of old charm, the front left almost but not quite. Obviously there are screens, machines and piped music. Laminate floors, a decor of old photos and a nice blown up OS map of the village opposite the counter.

The Wike Horse is situated on Heckmondwikes small market place. Once inside there is a single L shaped room,there is comfy bench seating in bays either side of the front door,the bar is in the middle area which narrows,there is a drinking shelf opposite the bar with bar stools to sit on,the rear area opens out,there is a pool table here and tall tables and chairs,the room is carpeted,there was a TV on in the front right area showing horse racing. There were two pumps on the bar with their clips turned round,i asked for a drink of real ale but was told it would be on later in the day,i doubted this,i had a drink of John Smiths smooth crap which was crap. The front area was packed with a mix of drinkers. This is a smart enough pub,shame about the lack of one real ale. Pub visited 2/1/2015
