West Riding Licensed Refreshment Rooms, Dewsbury

Pleasant station pub which was a delight to retreat into on a cold June (!) afternoon. I'd been recommended this place by a couple of different sources and as befits a boozer with a GBG listing it had an excellent range of real ales; TT Landlord & Mild, Black Sheep, Elland 872 Porter, Anglo Dutch Midsummer Ale (brewed locally), Springhead Charlie's Angel and Glentworth Lucky Star. The Charlie's Angel was good, a hoppy golden ale in decent nick. The interior is basic but well kept and the place was pretty busy during my brief visit indicating its popularity in the region. Definitely worth a look.

This multi-award winning bar was established in 1994 and is situated within the old waiting rooms and station offices on Platform 2 of Dewsbury Railway station (formerly Wellington Road), the last remaining of the 4 stations that once served the town. The bar can be accessed either via the ivy clad entrance from the car park or from the platform itself. The interior contains 3 rooms, all displaying copious amounts of railway artifacts, station memorabilia, neatly arranged old pictures and several period furnishings. The central main bar contains the original Wellington Road station name board that dangles above the bar and some classic waiting room bench seats built around the walls. To the right of the main bar is the dining area. Note the old pub sign from the now defunct Market House pub that stands a few minutes walk away (now a financial consultant’s office). A third section through an arch to the left of then bar contains a TV, small fireplace and doorway to the platform. The corridor to the toilets contains old adverts in a montage to lost local breweries. There is also some limited outside seating near the front entrance in a small garden area. The beer emphasis is on local breweries with 2 Black Sheep & 2 Timothy Taylor ales (Best & Rigwelter from the former, Landlord & Dark Mild from the latter) complemented by 4 more from local microbreweries (Beartown Kodiak Gold, Anglo Dutch Devils Knell, Glentworth Pot Of Gold and George Wright Roman Black). There was also a selection of Belgian bottled beers available with a listing on the wall. The quality was excellent and prices reasonable but the barman at the time of my visit seemed to be suffering from a personality bypass operation and service with a smile wasn’t the order of the day. There are beer festivals, curry nights and quiz evenings among the events schedule and free WiFi acess but you don’t really need any gimmicks to enjoy a good session here as the place virtually sells itself to ale drinkers and/or railway enthusiasts (I’ll claim to be the former more than the latter). There are many examples of railway stations being used for pubs, some work and some don’t, but this is amongst the best.

What an excellent station boozer. An early Friday evening visit found the place buzzing and with a very good atmosphere although there are more than enough staff to keep the wait for a beer short and they are efficient. Seven real ales on across various strengths and styles including Five Towns Durum Gold, TT Landlord and Dark Mild, Fabio's Gold from Greenfield and Potbelly's Beijing Black. Definitely well worth a visit by train in order to fully sample the extensive range of ales.

Little needs to be added to the ob review below.Thoroughly enjoyable visit and a good selection of fast rotating microbrewery ales.Glad to report that this is not the preserve of beer tickers ,there is a good customer mix and some pretty attractive ladies both behind the bar and kicking off their weekend libations,although the totty quotient decreased with every Leeds bound departure.There are t shirts available with the slogan "I missed the train at Dewsbury" which is a fine piece of advice.

I can’t add much to what’s already been said by other reviewers. We found this to be a busy place when we dropped in early on a Friday evening. Right on the west-bound platform at Dewsbury railway station. 8 handpulls that will always include Black Sheep, Timothy Taylor and the local, Anglo Dutch. GBG 2010 entry.

A famous stop on the Pennine RailAle Trail as it's on the westbound platform of Dewsbury station and was visited by beer buffoons James May and Oz Clarke in their TV series. There are three distinct areas with the bar counter in the middle part, with seating for eating and drinking in all parts. Décor is basic victorian type with bench seats, and cast iron sewing machine style tables. The walls have a collection of well deserved CAMRA awards, railway pictures and a shelf covered in beer bottles running all round the rooms. Bare floorboards and the usual blackboard listing forthcoming beers complete the scene. The 8 handpumps supply ales from local and regional brewers plus the odd one from further afield, on my visit the beers were from Taylors, Golcar, Glentworth, Marston Moor and Black Sheep of Yorkshire with Cottage being the visitor from the south. A good selection of euro kegs from Bitburger, Amstel, Grolsch and Heinekin are available at one end of the bar. Custom will of course vary with train arrivals and departures although there is direct street access at the front of the station.
