The Summer House, Wolverhampton

Traditional back street local, though on a main road. Wood floors, stools at the bar, back room with bigger tables, altogether a nice boozer, but the smoke does blow in from the bowling green (what is it with bowling greens & pubs around here). Old Wolverhampton pictures on the walls. I would like this as my local. 4 real ales - Adnams, Landlord, Enville and a guest. Beer quality is excellent. 7 1/2 really for this one

A lovely detached Victorian corner pub with a lower level side extension to a larger 'house' building, mainly in undressed brick, but with a white rendered facade. At the back there is a beer patio and covered food area, bowling green and small bowls pavilion. As usual, a great review from the Monster below. The interior has two rooms catered for by a central serving bar. The bar is in white and red, with wood floor, a nice wood surround fireplace, old photos on the walls, a dart board and a TV which was showing the footy. The lounge is divided it seems between a drinking lounge and a dining area. It is in white and red, with patterned wallpaper, again with old photos and a TV, which wasn't on. The service was very friendly and the clientele at my visit being somewhat mature, a few playing bowls. The music was general and at a quiet level. They do food here, but i didn't eat so can't comment on that. Beer; usual keg stuff with Theakston's Dark Smooth and London Pride, Adnams Bitter a great Timothy Taylor Landlord and Enville Ale on handpull. I completely echo Ale Monster'sfeelings. It is a super pub, almost country like in perhaps not the best area of Wolverhampton. Really worth a visit this one.

This is a lovely example of a traditional 150 year old Victorian corner pub which is now owned by Punch Taverns. The pub has two small rooms served by a central island bar, there is a public bar on the right and a lounge on the left of the building. The public bar is narrow with the bar counter along the left hand side, suede covered seating against the right side of the room, a nice cast iron fire place at the back with a dart board on the wall above and a large flat screen TV in the left corner at the front of the room. The lounge has two small areas divided by a central double sided chimney breast with two open log fires, the front area looks to be more for drinkers with a projector screen on the left hand wall while the back area is set out for dining and has a good view out over the bowling green behind the pub which has a covered patio and a small wooden pavilion building. Regular ales are Enville Ale, Adnams Bitter and Fullers London Pride with a single changing guest beer, which was Wychwood Hobgoblin on this occasion. Its worth noting that there was also Theakston Dark Mild on keg. I tried the Enville and the Pride which were in very good condition in my opinion (GBG 2011). A great traditional pub with some nice original features, traditional décor and lots of character, the beer selection is decent and well kept with a discount for card carrying CAMRA members, which was useful as the beer was a bit pricey by Wolverhampton standards at £2.80 a pint. I did not try the food but I believe it is all home cooked and freshly prepared. A good pub, I would gladly return. (Note that CAMRA discount is not on all real ales! Ask before you buy.)
