Broomfield Tavern, Chapel Fields, Coventry

I've been here a couple of times before and it was one of only 9 pubs around the UK that I scored a 10/10 for. As such, despite it being the 12th pub and towards the end of our list, I was very much looking forward to a return visit. Situated on a quiet side street overlooking a park with sports pitches, it is not a place you would discover in passing. The interior was very much as I remembered it. Bare boards, with a small room and bar area that extends slightly round the corner. The ale range is still good, with the regular ale being Church End Fallen Angel. Guest beers were Pitchfork Pitchfork, AJ's Stuck In The Dog House & Bradfield Farmer's Stout. Real ciders were Lilley's Cherries & Berries, Pina Colada, Mango Cider, Woo Woo, Lemon & Ginger Cider, Raspberry Mojito, Merry Monkey, Somerset Scrumpy, Wild Dog, Pickled Parrot, Bee Sting Perry & Crazy Goat, Snail's Bank Pineapple & Grapefruit Cider, Abrahall's Lily The Pink, AM & Slack Alice, Weston's Rosie's Pig, Gwatkin No Bull & Yarlington Mill, Dorset Nectar Wild Cat, Cock Eyed Copper Beech & Dudda's Tun Bone Dry. 22 ciders is certainly an impressive range, but of the 4 new ciders I saw in Coventry, none of them were found here. In addition, I'm sure I remember a larger ale selection here last time I came. I do recall that the pub is a haven for dogs. That is certainly still the case. Although there was an overwhelming smell of wet dogs when we entered, which was off-putting. I still really like this pub and could happily enjoy a lengthy session here, as I have done previously. However, it didn't quite hit the spot this time. As such, I'll downgrade my score to a still very creditable 9/10.

A gem for real ale and cider drinkers.The CAMRA review says it all - "A genuine free house, the small bar is virtually filled with hand-pumps. The beer range features many unusual choices. Friday night's music sessions often host well-known musicians. Also Live folk/mountain music Mondays and Thursdays. This Victorian pub - currently branch Pub of the Year and West Midlands Regional Cider Pub of The Year - is situated in a rural setting but is just behind the main road near to Coventry rugby ground."

Had the Gamekeeper cider fantastic , very rustic feel - A gem

The is a small cottage-styled pub, in the GBG, with a few benches out the front. It is in white render with red paintwork. The interior has a couple of rooms, although the back room doesn't seem to be used (I once played darts in there, so I assume the board is still there). The main room is an L-shape, with the bar off to the left on entry. The décor is wood panel and cream and there is a part flag floor where there are sofas and tables, and a wood floor near the bar. Old photos and drawings are on the walls and a few bottles and jugs are dotted about. There is a burner fire. There was no TV or music. The service was fine and we were the only ones in at our most recent visit. Beer; usual taps with a real cider, and four handpulls; Sarah Hughes MILD, No18 Brewery's Dragon Fire, Wye Valley HPA and Lymm's Dam Strong Ale (7.2%). The HPA was fine. Always pop into this one when in Coventry, a nice little place.

With its 'green' location, stacked logs by the door, woodburner, wooden floors and beams and convivial atmosphere, The Broomfield Tavern could easily be nestling in an idyllic village rather than amongst the mean streets of Cov. It's pleasantly traditional and on our visit had a smattering of chatty and friendly regulars propping up the bar. As Mr F mentions, it is also a favourite of the local CAMRA branch. Beers: Gales Seafarers, Bass, Rainbow Inglenook and Rossters Yankee. Rainbow is a small local brewery well known by the CAMRA types who had a long discussion on the merits of Inglenook and the ingredients and processes used in it's brewing. I didn't give it a go but the Bass was in good nick and the Yankee drinkable. A lovely boozer and perhaps my favourite to date in Cov.
