Saint Paul's House, Birmingham

The Ropewalk is a newish bar that is situated in a nice area of Hockley facing St Pauls church. Once inside there is a large square shaped room with the bar on the left side,the floor was polished wood and there was a tall bench seat to the rear with tall tables,there was also tall tables and chairs opposite the bar,the front left side loooked a bit more comfy,this area was carpeted and had comfy looking chairs,the far right side was raised. The pub is a Marstons house but not signed as so,there were three real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Brakspear bitter which was a decent drink,the other beers were Jennings Cumberland and Marsons Endeavour single hop. There was some decent background music playing. This was a pleasant enough place to have a drink in. Pub visited 17/8/2013

All a bit modern and open. Not best known for a good pint I fear. There are better places locally.

This is a terraced Georgian styled now Marston's foody pub in St Paul's Square. The pub is in plain undressed brick, but has a lovely Georgian neo-classic columned entrance with entablature and sash windows, with a nice central arched doorway. The interior is an open-plan room with a central partition. The decor is white and wood panel walls, with white ceiling and with mainly a wood floor. The seating is comfy loungy types of chairs with a few sofas. There is a small tiled fireplace and a large chandelier by the serving bar, which is to the left on entry. Some old photos of Brum are on the walls to provide some interest. There was no TV that i saw and the background music was charty and a little on the loud side and accompanied by green laser lights. The service was OK and there was a very mixed clientele. Beer; usual tap stuff with Brakspear Bitter, Pedigree and a decent enough Jenning's Cocker-Hoop on handpull. A typical Marston's foody pub for beer and food choice and a little too loungey in its feel for me. Nothing wrong with it if you like that kind of thing - kind of place i did when i was 19.

Large open plan, high ceiling Marstons house, on the opposite site of St Pauls Square to the Rectory and in my opinion far superior. Very friendly efficient service it has quite a loungy feel, comfy chairs and there are sofas in front of the windows overlooking the church gardens. Pictures of old Birmingham on the cream walls, there are lots of square lines and wood panelling. There is a chandelier above the main bar area. There is a traditional menu, food around the £6 mark. There were 3 staple Marstons real ales - Brakespear Bitter (seems to be getting far too common for my liking!), Pedigree and Jennings Hunny-bole, which was well kept.
