The Anchor, Birmingham

I thought I was back in Manchester as I approached the red bricked Anchor that looks very inviting sat on a corner plot with leaded windows. The interior is wooden floored apart from tiling that runs from both entrances to the large barstool lined central L-shaped serving counter the supports Premium and mainstream craft keg alongside Carling and seven hand pumps, six of which were in use drawing M&B Mild, Bass, Titanic’s Iceberg, Ossett’s White Rat, Church End Brewery’s Fallen Angel and a Stan’s Cider from Thatchers. I went for a pint of Bass that was very good, but a bit pricey at £5.90, and I’ll add that the barmaid was miserable as sin during the whole transaction. I sat at the bar where I noted the heated pipes at foot level around the counter, they’re hard to miss, and the banquette seating around the exterior walls. There was also a vocal game of pool in progress on the table adjacent to the counter. I spotted seating in the rear, but it looked like the lights were out, so I didn’t investigate. Despite the unwelcoming service, I still liked it in here and would revisit if passing.
