The Inn On The Green, Dorking

Good fish and chips. Average Marstons beer. Friendly service. Big empty pub inside. Big enough garden with plenty of tables outside. Pretty good overall then.

OK I guess. Spacious inside, as in garden, with the pub dog wandering around. Has a "house music" evening on Friday nights which I was surprised to see in this area. Staff seem to be mostly young Antipodeans, some of whom could do with investing in a belt. Not bad although would say more family orientated than traditional. Wasn't being used on our visit but BBQ area out back and hog roast too I think. Wouldn't touch the pate again though. Worth a try, especially if with kids/grandparents in tow

As the name suggests, the Inn on the Green overlooks a large village green that itself is worthy of a quick stroll around, although the pub was originally called the Red Lion and dates back to the 15th Century. Externally, the pub appears to be an amalgamation of 2 double fronted cottages whilst the interior has been extended and is quite a sprawl through numerous opend out, rooms, sections and recesses. The main emphasis is on dining although, apart from the restaurant section itself, drinking and dining seem to be fairly interchangeable. The front section is the most pubby bit with a dart board and pool area. It is also the most interesting section with low beamed ceilings that contrast with the extended rear areas where the head is less at risk from potential concussion. The décor is quite simple and uncluttered apart from a few old pictures (including an aerial view of the pub), a couple of recreation inglenook fireplaces and an aquarium in the dining section (labeled as the no smoking room on my visit but has now refurbished and renamed Green Rooms restaurant). The restaurant area is housed in a large extension at the rear and looks out onto a large attractive tree lined garden with childrens play area. I made no notes regarding the food but the ales consisted of a choice of 2 from Greene King (IPA and Old Speckled Hen) and 2 from Horsham (Best and Red River). From memory, the quality and pricing were not a major issue. My visit was some time ago but we found the place very welcoming although it is a bit isolated for public transport and is more practical for a family meal out than a booze session unless you have a designated driver. I would certainly pop in again if passing.
