The George (JD Wetherspoon), Croydon

Visited 12/01/26. Ticking visit on 10/07/19. Cask here was GK IPA, Doom Bar, Abbot, Thornbridge Jaipur, Thieving Rogue a pale IPA from Magpie Brewery, Green Devil a cask aged IPA from Oakham, Titanic Plum Porter, Exmoor Gold and Game )n from JW Lees. Keg was usual suspects of Budweiser, Carlsberg, Leffe Blonde, K1664, Stella, Guinness, Carling, Corona, Stowford Press, Bud Light, original and dark fruits SB, Angelo Poretti, Worthington CF, Coors, Shipyard pale ale, BrewDog Punk IPA and Mad Squirrel Big Sea. Been to this place a good few times over the years and always an enjoyable visit with the beer quality always v good. Long narrow venue with the bar counter an L shape in the front part of the venue with a boarded skirt, otherwise carpeted venue. A few tall tables to the left of the entrance where the large imposing fruit machines reside. Similar story to the right of the entrance just a few more tall tables. There is a drinking ledge with tall stools opposite the longer part of the bar counter up the right-hand wall. The rear, much longer part has initially tall copper topped tables, drinking ledges on the walls, then regular tables down the middle and booth style tables either side. No piped music or TV sounds, just the chatter of the punters here. Different universe to the soulless Coombe Lodge out of town visited just ahead of this one. This one I will definitely frequently return to!

My first visit to a Spoons in over two years and it may be some time before another, the only reason I came here was due to the repute of its beer range which despite checking both bars didn't live up to my expectations, plenty of usual suspects and a few guests but both the Oakham Green Devil and Jaipur had gone off unreplaced so I settled for an Adnams Ghost Ship which itself wasn't in the greatest shape. The pub of course was heaving on a Friday late morning, but as a pub experience I'm afraid this does very little for me.
