The Globe Inn, Wells

Main bar is white and duck egg, with a bag of planks in the corner and a smell of recent unfinished works. Quiet, we were the only punters. A somewhat optimistic three MOR ales on, my half of Courage Directors was at least par (NBSS 3), served-up by a mute barman. Neither me nor my companion got much out of this one – felt like it was drifting. There’s potential though, as there’s a long and flagstoned side corridor with further rooms leading off. But it needs a more visionary approach overall. 5.5

Since Blackthorn’s review, below, the pub has been closed for several years, reopening this year under a new regime and with a new look. The car park has indeed been reinstated since Jonathan Wilde’s review. The layout hasn’t changed much, but the overall feel has. It feels more of a town local now, not aimed at the affluent tourists like some other pubs in Wells. They host live jazz on Sundays, they are dog friendly (free treats on the bar) and the food offering is Pieminister pies, which are at a reasonable price. Three ales on, Tribute, Directors and Jail Ale, all in average condition. The barmaid was friendly enough, but not the sharpest chisel in the toolbox; she had never heard of CAMRA an it took some effort for her to grasp the concept. There was a keg range of Poretti, Somersby Fruit cider, Thatcher’s Gold and Rascal, Carling, Brooklyn, Guinness, San Miguel and Amstel. It’s great to see a traditional pub reopening, and it’s certainly worth a look in when passing.
