The Crown, Oxford

Recently acquired by olde worlde pub specialists Nicholsons, this looked like an intriguing prospect, situated off a small alley. Apparently the interior has had a hefty makeover and is now full of dark wood fittings, half wood panelling and beams. It’s fairly dark inside with the effect enhanced by deliberately muted lighting. Seven ales and a cider were available at the long narrow bar. We tried the Hadleys Blonde (pedestrian) and Nethergate Umbel Magna (good). One off-putting thing was that the pub seemed to have preponderance of midge-like flies. I’d give this one another go but it didn’t immediately impress.
