The Ship, Berwick-Upon-Tweed

Can never go wrong with a ship inn! Traditional terrace pub. Wooden floored bar area with classic pub furniture and bar at far end. Nice garden, which appears to be having a new building created in it. Lovely staff. Allendale Pennine Pale Ale in fine condition.

The Ship was formerly called the Northumberland Arms but was renamed The Ship Inn in 1995 after a complete renovation and refurbishment programme but the Holy Islanders still affectionately refer to the pub as “The Tavern”. As described below the main space is a traditional bar area with a bit of a nautical theme with wood panel walls with boat artefacts and plenty of various Holy Island photographs and paintings. And then there is a separate carpeted dining area with traditional stone walls and wood panelling. And then there is a pleasant garden area outback. Although there was some exterior Belhaven branding this is a Free house and there were two beers from the Hadrian Border Brewery available, Secret Kingdom and one called Holy Island blessed bitter which is apparently brewed for the pub. This one probably had a bit more character than the Crown and Anchor, but I liked them both, and if you ever missed the tides , at least you wouldn’t go thirsty.
