The Ship, Berwick-Upon-Tweed

The Ship can be found on a side street in Holy Island, a little away but not too far from the main sights. It's still very much a tourist and food-oriented pub, but it felt a little more welcoming than the Crown & Anchor and its location means that it's probably not quite as popular as the Manor House Hotel. The main bar has bare boards and a mixture of stone walls and wood panelling. There are various fishing and nautical items on the walls, ceiling and on shelves. A fireplace has some local gin bottles on it. There is a shop nearby selling the gin. A separate sunken dining room is carpeted, but has similar walls, whilst there is an outdoor area to the rear. Food such as crab sandwiches is served. There is a specials board on one wall. Children and dogs are also allowed. The house beer is Hadrian Border Holy Island Blessed Bitter. Guests were Hadrian Border Tyneside Blonde & Thornbridge Wild Swan. Beavertown Neck Oil was on keg. Of the 3 pubs on the island, this was my favourite. But it's still nothing to write home about.

Stone built terraced cottage pub, two rooms although both are used for eating the lower one to the right is set out as a dining room. There’s bench seating at Britannias with wooden stools. The counter is in the rear left corner sporting three pumps with decently kept Hadrian Border beers plus two T-Bars of usual national kegs. Decor is largely nautical but there are some paintings and prints of the locality from the artist’s studio over the road and some old black and white photos. The toilets are labelled Buoys and Gulls, other daft signs can be spotted. Gin is produced in a shed at the bottom of the garden apparently. I think the governor might have had enough of tourists for the season when we called in.
