Good looking old pub, although the reconfigured and unsympathetically refurbished interior - with the bar in the centre, a lounge with a sports TV to the left and a dining room on the right-hand side - disappoints. The cask ale choice of Tribute or Oakham Citra (£3.80) from the three handpumps is also limited

An aged, attractive Tudor building, incongruously surrounded by a thundering through-road and a nasty car park. Two very distinct rooms inside, separated by a narrow bar area. This small bar greets you on entering with a myriad of pumps, though only four were on and a fairly safe line-up of GK Abbot, GK London Glory, Tribute, Adnams Ghost Ship (decent nick) with polite service. Look out for carved wood lion heads on lower bar covering. The left room has a tiled floor, black beamed ceiling, leaded windows, some bench seating and button back sofas along with TV sport. Through a door on the right of the bar is a high vaulted ceiling baronial-style room with dark wood panelling, a mini suit of armour, a jumbo gold framed mirror and a minstrels gallery - quite a spectacle. It’s worth a visit this one; shame the beer range wasn’t a bit more diverse.
