The Saracens Head Inn (JD Wetherspoon), Daventry

Large Spoon's which is a bit of a maze inside. A little tired to be honest and in need of a refurb. Nothing that exciting beer wise with Spitfire being the only guest beer I noticed alongside the regulars.

A multi room Spoons converted from an old coaching inn, so the exterior looks quite decent but the interior is fairly bland and characterless beyond the novelty of the interconnected drinking areas. Only one guest ale (a pretty grim example of Old Hooky) and a hopeless barman who'd be out of his depth in a puddle. Interesting collection of stains on the ceiling. Terrible – one of the bottom 5 in terms of Wetherspoons I’ve been in.

Apparently this was an old coaching inn but you would never guess that from the interior. The entrance takes you into the bar area which has just a few tall tables & chairs with no other seating at all. Coming away from here is a small area with low seating and down a few steps to another similar slightly larger area. Running along the bar area is a paved patio behind which is another room with low tables and chairs. The ceiling is low, modern and probably false so any sense of being in an old coaching inn is completely lost. Nevertheless it seemed to be doing a fair trade before midday on a Friday, mostly food. The bar has two sets of hand pumps but with one "available soon", a cider and the JDW Trio Of Doom doubled up the choice was just Titanic Stout or Wadworth / Nausta Lapland Red Ale. I went for the Stout (£2.09) and the Red (£2.25) both of which were in good condition. These prices are cheap compared to the South and I also noticed that the food prices were cheaper than I'm used to seeing. If this is the normal situation with the beer choice then it's pretty pathetic. The micropub only a short distance away is a much better option although it's around a quid a pint dearer.
