Oliver Cromwell, St. Ives

Named after the eponymous soldier even though the pub was opened about 200 years after he demolished the town bridge, when Victoria was on the throne, it is still an historic edifice and a pretty good local. Eventually discovering this wonderful GBG perennial, we found it packed with CAMRA types, retired Army officers and miscellaneous others, no room even to swing a kangaroo. Beers on during this visit were Southwold Bitter, Phantom Pale Ale, Mid Autumn Gold, Ghostship, Broadside, Oakham's JHB plus 9 craft beers; I had Oakhams and Southwold, both in excellent condition . This is a small pub tucked down a back street near the river. It's been a genuine free house for decades as I recall briefly visiting it in the 1980s. Inside it's a small shallow room with the bar in the middle facing and a few extra seats to the right and the left leading to a small patio. The bar has six hand pumps which had Adnam's Broadside & Bitter, Oakham JHB, Nene Valley Hop Stash Simcoe & Jim's Little Brother and Lacon's Legacy. I went for the Hop Stash Simcoe which at four quid seemed way overpriced to me. To be fair the JHB was marked up at £2.75. I thought this was a pleasant enough pub which has been a GBG regular for ages.
