The Jolly Butchers, Enfield

The Jolly Butchers is a traditional Victorian fronted pub a short way down Baker Street from the Enfield Civic Centre and is part of the McMullen brewery chain. It used to be a bit dark and grotty, but underwent a Mcmullen makeover a little while back which, unlike other recent refurbs of their pubs, actually improved the place without ripping out all the interesting features and making it a restaurant. Although the profusion of dark wood remains it has been toned down with lighter flock wallpaper and the expanse of front glass has been freed from curtains making it now a fairly light and airy pub. It’s proximity to the civic centre means it’s usually busy of a lunch time with the local council workers, but tends to be a quieter option during the evening than the other nearby pubs in Baker Street who go for bands and Karaoke evenings to pack them in. As mentioned by the reviewer below, The Jolly Butchers has three plasma screens dotted about for the footy and a dart board which supports an active darts team in the local leagues. Usual McMullen suspects on offer and the Country has usually been good on my infrequent visits.

This is a decent pub for McMullens with a dartboard, and three plasma screens which show Sky Sports and ESPN. I thought that the barman was very friendly and my pint of Guinness was good. Unsurprisingly, a range of McMullen ales are available alongside a standard draught selection. I thought that the choice of background music was a little depressing for a Saturday night, but this is my only real complaint.
