Peter Kavanaghs, Liverpool

The heritage interior of Peter Kavanaghs includes a serving counter up the right over which some pots, pans and other quirky odds and sods hang. Opposite the counter to the left are some split-level brown banquettes as well as an old piano and at the rear of the bar is a snug with banquettes, a large green tiled fireplace and round tables with built in ashtrays, that obviously haven’t been used for a long time, cough. There’s what looks like a large radio in the corner and more smaller radios sit on shelves around this snug, and of course more quirky stuff hangs from the ceiling. There’s also seating in the front bay that is prominent from the outside and stained glass and wood carvings can be found throughout. During a recent bank holiday Monday evening visit premium keg was available alongside Fosters and the four hand pumps were drawing Theakston’s Hairy Bikers, GK Abbot Ale, TT Landlord and Hogs Back Brewery’s Surrey Nirvana. This place is worth the extra walk from the main drag, especially for fans of historic pub interiors.

Every time I go to Liverpool, I fall in love with a new pub. This one won today's fondness. Exactly what I look for in a pub. Rooms to explore. Period decoration. Interesting nick nacks. Deep personalisation from Peter himself and Rita - who from my limited research is Liverpools oldest landlady. Thank god they allow photos to be taken. Good Beer Guide entry and TT Landlord in super condition. So really, its got it all. And live music on a Saturday.

A beautiful heritage interior - worth every one of its three stars on Camra's inventory. There are two sets of two hand pumps, with Landlord and Abbot to the left and a couple of guests to the right. One was from Salopian and the other Black Sheep. I went for the Black Sheep Blonde, which was in very good condition (NBSS 4) and probably the best beer that I can recall drinking in the blonde category. I went and sat in the small room to the left of the bar, which has some amazing carved figures around the fireplace, and some rather faded paintings on the walls. The barman told me they were having to put prices up this week, but as this meant that my Black Sheep would have been £2 instead of £1.95, I said that I wasn't particularly bothered. (The Landlord and Abbot are going up by rather more, it seems.)
