The Hare & Hounds, Manchester

I recall visiting the Hare and Hounds back in 2013 on a Thursday afternoon when it was very busy with a rowdy pensioner crowd. Fast forward to a midweek evening last week, I found myself to be the only customer so I got to have a better look around. Unsurprisingly the tiled exterior and interior walls still make this pub stand out as a traditional Grade II listed city centre pub dating from around 1800. The bar protruding from the right hand wall serves a lobby with a couple of tables to the left in addition to front and rear seating areas. There are steps up to the entrance on Shudehill, but the rear entrance on Salmon Street is step free. There is no Sky or BT Sports here so the barman was watching the match on his phone. The bar supports four handpumps that were drawing 2x Holt Bitter and Robinson’s Dizzy Blonde with the forth pump being unused. There is also a limited standard and premium keg selections. I found the service to be very friendly and left thinking that I would have no problem returning once again.

Good Beer Guide 2021 Entry and also in the Heritage Interiors Book. Need to keep your eyes peeled on the street - a very unassuming exerior. Inside, its all half height brown tiling, wooden panels, central serving area. An 11 O Clock opener - which makes it worth knowing, should you want to get out the rain. Two ales on - the Holts Bitter in excellent condition. Loved the timeless feel of the place - and only a stones thrown from the madness of the City Centre. An oasis of old school calm.
