The Wolf's Tavern, Deptford, SE8

Visited 24/11/25. Visited previously as Black Horse on 10/08/22. No cask. The hand pumps were purely decorative. Keg offering of Camden Hells & Pale Ale, Harbour Arctic Sky Cold IPA, Damon Lemon, Beano! California IPA from the London Brewing Company, Mahou, Corona, Stella and Stella unfiltered, San Miguel, Gravity Theory cider, Kopparberg strawberry & lime cider, Guinness. I struggled to see the new branding on the outside, still looked like the Black Horse, but there was plenty of “wolf” related paraphernalia on the inside. The front part of the inside of this bare boarded venue is U shaped with the bar counter following the shape of the venue with tall stool seating around the three sides of the bar counter. Plush leather booth tables in the front of the venue with regular tables down the right-hand side. More narrow down the left-hand side with regular tables and chairs. There is a room at the back on the left-hand side with leather sofas and a traditional table football game. A large screen showing nothing over on the right-hand wall with a jaunty soundtrack playing. The venue was very festive on my visit but even allowing for it was a Monday evening visit at 8.30pm I was the only punter.

This pub is still in Millwall territory with the trademark blue and white banner on one of the walls. An interesting decorative feature, but it hardly makes up for the lack of a real ale. I didn't see any sign of food either when I was in at Wednesday lunchtime. Much of the original Truman's signage remains on the exterior, and inside the ceiling still has the Truman's trademark framed Vitrolite paneling. There's also still some paneling largely separating the rooms, with the room on the right containing the pool table, and the room on the left containing the dartboard down at the back. It's bare-boarded throughout, has banquettes along the sides with rectangular wooden tables and small round stools. There was a TV on showing some quiz show. So, inside it's OK, with no airs or graces, but the absence of a real ale is a big minus factor for me. Pubs around here are struggling to survive, and I accept that they have to cater for what their customers want, and I concede that this will not always include real ale.
