The Cannick Tapps, Cannon Street, EC4

A Gothic-themed cellar bar opposite Cannon St Station. The crypt-like approach down a narrow staircase, greeted by a gargoyle, sets the scene. The cellar has Gothic-arched doors and mirrors, more gargoyles and wrought iron fittings. The toilet doors are 'disguised' as library shelves. Most of the clientele are basement-dwellers, bearded trolls and leather-clad humans, while the staff are friendly and welcoming. There are, as well as a cash machine, are some gaming machines, but no-one was interested in them, and any sound they may have been making was drowned out by the noisy, cacophonous music-with-rocks-in emanating from the sound system – at least we were spared the weekly Open Mic night. FreePub Wifi was available. There was a strange smell coming from the kitchen; it was unclear whether this was from the staff or the cooking process. Food was of the burger variety, with one or two cliched pub 'classics' thrown in, and it wasn't that good. Three pumps on the bar but only one was dispensing – Hobgoblin, which fitted the pub's theme but wasn't in brilliant condition. It was a bit of fun, but I don't see my coming here too often due to the beer quality issue and the noise; I don't want to end up stone deaf.

Basement bar located across the road from cannon street station. A "gothic" styled interior as described below. 3 real ale taps 2 off during my visit. Food served.

The London Stone is opposite Cannon Street station and it has got a very narrow frontage. This pub is in a basement and is quite small and claustrophobic once inside and seemed like a goths pub or styled like a goths pub would be. There were no real ales on here and the only bitter was John Smiths smooth crap so i had a Guinness. The pub was very quiet on a Thursday dinner time and it is not really the sort of pub i like going in but it was a better option than the one next door.
