The Red Lion, SW1

A pub has existed here in some form since 1423, apparently rebuilt in the 1890s though the very fine mahogany bar back bears the date of 1900. Apart from the dark lacquered floor, very detailed ceiling and enormous spindly brass chandeliers (see photo) which look like giant spider crabs, the description for this CAMRA inventory with an interior of Regional Importance is best appreciated on CAMRA’s site and the gallery on the pub’s own site. This surprisingly blokey pub boasts of having served Charles Dickens and every Prime Minister up to Edward Heath; has every PM since been teetotal? I can imagine Thatcher tucking her skirt into her knickers after using the loo at closing time. Despite the ventilation from the open door and resultant cold, there was an all-pervasive smell of fish ‘n’ chips, which wasn’t great. Ales: Pride, ESB and Oliver’s Island of course, I opted for a Beavertown Gamma Ray at a barely comprehensible £7.15, served in the brewery’s annoying branded kiddie glass. This isn’t a bad pub, but I’d really only come here to appreciate the interior over a swift half before moving on.

Needed food and had looked at the menu on-line before popping in on my walk. I knew they were big on pies. There's a nice little restaurant upstairs with great service. My ESB was served in the ceremonial handled jug, which was a nice touch. Damn fine. Pie was good as well. All in all - a good experience in a busy part of town.
