The Mitre, W2

A classic Victorian corner pub but with a mercilessly modernised inside front bar, although a nice counter and period style wallpaper tone it down and the barback is a real classic. Badged as a Youngs house it serves Youngs ordinary and a beer from Hackney plus a cider on the five pulls. There are also twelve keg taps with Camden, Meantime and some National brands. At the back the rooms are in a Victorian style but I didn't explore them. The pretentious use of a Victorian country house servants bell board loses it points. The beer is very well looked after it's just some of the choices seem driven by trendiness not quality. Some of the staff were exemplary.

The Mitre is a traditional pub with an L shaped bar area down the left hand side where there are some high tables and chairs. To the front right is a small seating room with two ornate glass panelled doors with ‘Ladies Only’ and ‘Private’ which suggests that this area used to be two very small snugs. More seating is found to the right rear of the pub and behind the bar in a separate room. There was some background music playing and I didn’t spot any televisions. Café seating runs down both exterior walls of this corner pub. The bar supports five hand pumps that were drawing Young’s Ordinary and Special alongside Redemption’s Urban Dusk and Pale Ale as well as Weston’s Twist cider. There is also a standard and premium draught selection. Food is available and the cheapest thing I could find on the menu was a risotto for £10. I think that this pub is worth a look if in the area, but I wouldn’t want to stay in here all evening.
