Upper Red Lion, Herne Bay

In a village with one excellent pub, one good and one *cough* less good pub, can you guess which one this is? Yes, it’s the wooden spoon. To be fair it’s not that awful and in some respects it does have a bit of character (the rest of which looked to have been ripped out years ago). It’s pretty big inside and the red-brick the building is unusually large given its location – looks like it was built for a bigger road that never materialised. A couple of uninspiring ales, I think my token half was a Courage Best. Pretty gloomy inside which rather reflected the atmosphere. The real fire remained stubbornly unlit. Large grassed beer garden to the rear which could have been a bit better utilised. Get the feeling this one won’t be around much longer which is a shame. EDIT – I was right. Punch closed it not long after my visit and put the freehold up for sale.

We didnt stop long on a Sunday afternoon. The few regulars in the front bar had obviously been busy and the stench from the toilets was unbearable. Can't remember what I drank and I will never return.

Very good village pub. Large garden pool table, darts etc, Live music every weekend (fast becoming one of the best music venues locally) good Food..well done..
