Ye Olde Crown, Edenbridge

Lots going for it, from a historical perspective. C14th building. Able to trace back landlords to the 1500s. A tunnel used by smugglers between the pub and the church (was the Vicar in on it?). Ticked all the boxes for what I look for in a pub. Then there is today's business. One bar man, who was also the waiter, trying to keep on top of everything. He was summonsed to deliver meals by a doorbell. Beerwise - just one real ale - Ringwood fortyniner - which was in fine condition. Preferred the Old Eden down the road. Dating in part from the 14th Century, the exterior is attractive with white slatted walls and black beams, a low wonky beamed ceiling inside with more timber framing on view, leaded windows. The bar area is boarded, carpeted to the side where there is a huge inglenook fireplace which now runs through to the side room where a dresser replaces the hearth. Shelves contain pewter tankards and pottery, horse brasses are on display. Stairs lead up to an open galleried floor with a vaulted ceiling. Rooms are available with the reception towards the rear of the pub. Four handpumps, Ringwood 49er (£3.60), Wychwood Hobgoblin + Hb Gold, one reversed. Various activities advertised suggesting a community use. it was ok, nothing more.

Harvey's mentioned elsewhere but on my visit this gave the impression of a Marstons tied house offering Pedigree, Burton Bitter, & Old Empire. I'm often a little sceptical believing Marstons not to be the best of travellers, but the Burton was fine. Pub has Ye Olde look outside not necessarily reflected inside, although there is an enormous fireplace just off the bar area (unlit on this occasion). Some characters chatting around bar, chalk board menu looked pretty good although I didn't see diners, coffee machine in front bar, reception/accommodation out back.
