The Lady Luck, Canterbury

Situated at the Western end of the High Street, Lady Luck is a student friendly, two room, rock pub. The place was in full-on Halloween mode when we visited, with cobwebs and fake blood everywhere and loads of student types dressed up in their best scary costumes, apart from one who had seemingly misread the invite and turned up dressed as a banana. You enter into the front bar with the servery along the left hand wall and an open space opposite which was being used as a dancefloor on our late night visit. The rear room has a bit of seating and a pool table and leads out to a small courtyard at the back. Loud rock music was being played by the DJ throughout our stay and there is a rock and metal juke box to take over when he's off duty. Rock karaoke is also arranged on a regular basis and unsurprisingly there is a decent roster of live music acts each month. In keeping with the Halloween theme, a TV next to the bar was showing 'Dawn of the Dead' followed by the intriguingly titled 'Zombie Strippers'. Food is available during the day, with a student friendly menu centred around burgers and the like. Two hand pumps were dispensing Sharp's Doom Bar and Skinners Betty Stogs. I gave the latter a try and thought it was in reasonable shape if not quite perfect. Stowford Press and Old Rosie ciders were also available alongside a standard keg range. I quite liked the quirky feel of this place and whilst it has something of a niche appeal, I thought it was at least welcoming and didn't seem to take itself too seriously. A good place for the student population and worth a look if you fancy a go on that juke box.

Predominantly student bar with two hand pumps serving Doombar and Hobgoblin. We came here mainly because you can get hand rolling tobacco from behind the bar after all other potential cigarette outlets have closed. I doubt I’ll come here again as it’s not really my cup of tea, but it seemed popular with its target clientele.
