The Navigation Inn, Oldham

An impressive stone pub which is pleasantly traditional inside with carpets and dark wood furniture. As Mr. Fastard notes it is geared towards food with the tables in the main area of the pub laid for eating but there are a few tables at the front close to the bar where you can enjoy a beer. Beers on were Millstone Tiger Ru, in good nick, Saltaire Blonde, Brains Rev James, Skinners Betty Stogs and Thwaites Lancaster Bomber. All served by a friendly and delightful orange and blonde barmaid. I'd happily pop in again.

This stone built pub is a short walk up the main road from the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and originally supplied the navvies who built the impressive flight of locks nearby.These days the small interior is an open plan lounge with a semi circular bar .There is a flatscreen (off) on a back wall of exposed stone.The inside is small,and has dining style tables as food is a main draw here.The menu listed pub grub staples while the specials were interestingly varied and a proper chef was at work,no sign of the dead hand of foodservice products.There is no muzak which helps maintain the relaxed vibe,and the photos on the walls had a lot of references to Lancaster bombers.The pub has featured in several recents GBG's and the five handpumps always include Millstone Tiger Rut which was on top form on my visit. A very good stopping place for a beer or a meal,one to revisit when I'm next in the area.
