Adam & Eve, Cheltenham

On the edge of town in a back street row of terraced houses is The Adam and Eve, an unpretentious, unspoilt, small two bar community local. It’s a two bar pub with the larger public bar on the right hand side being the centrepiece of the pub’s activities. There’s a rather old fashioned feel to the place with oval shaped copper topped tables, individual padded seats and something of a lived in feel to it. In one corner, by the doors leading out to the garden, is a popular dartboard. An extension houses a skittle alley – not in use during my visit. On my recent Saturday evening visit, the free juke box was belting out all the old 60’s and 70’s favourites, thus contributing to a certain time warp feel. Outside toilets ( difficult to find in the dark ) complete the picture. A friendly, long serving landlady contributes much to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It’s an Arkells pub, a brewery whose beers appear to be seldom, if ever, encountered in the free trade and I cannot recollect having previously visited one of their tied houses either. 3 Arkells beers were on – 3B, Wiltshire and Moonlight, all in good condition, if not particularly memorable pints.
