The Woolpack, Moulsham, Chelmsford

The Woolpack is a Greene King pub that looked very inviting with it lights on as I approach at dusk on a recent Thursday. There’s a central bar that serves a public bar to the right that houses a pool table and dartboard, and a more comfortable bar to the left where I spent the duration of my visit. In here banquettes run along the front windows and up the left-hand wall opposite the serving counter up the right. On the rear wall a huge screen was showing muted satellite football while some D.I.S.C.O. music played I the background, right up my street! At the rear is a large open plan seating area that I took to be an empty dining room. Available from the friendly bar staff were a selection of premium keg products alongside Neck Oil and eight hand pumps, six of which were in use drawing Thirsty Moose Brewing’s Nowt But Stout, Hardy & Hansons Bitter, Greene King’s Brightside Pale and Scrumdown, Landlord and Woolpack which I’m not sure about. As Greene King pubs go, I thought this place was very good and will return if I find myself passing again.

Traditional corner local run by Greene King. The baby poo green paint is a mis-step in an otherwise nice interior - classic pub carpet alongside a mahogany (with stained glass upper) servery. TV rugby on a big screen with an audience of nil. Six (!) cask with four genuinely oddball GK list choices plus TT Landlord and Mauldons (again!). I went for a half of the GK Watch Room which was lacking a bit of turnover but was drinkable (NBSS 2.5), a classic case of more cask on than demand warrants meaning fewer people then drink your cask as it gets a bad rep. Scatty barmaid tried to charge me for a pint, wasn’t surprised. It's a fair place for a look-in but the ale drinkers are elsewhere despite the willing line-up. 6.5
