The Kings Head, Lewes

After a short walk through picturesque Southover Grange Gardens, we find ourselves in affluent Southover. This is quite an upmarket pub so naturally a bit foodie. Customers were prosperous locals, then an eclectic mêlée drawn from around the country. A Gun/Harvey’s selection amounted to a half of Old Ale, a very pricey £3.00 – understandable given the location – and good. A nice pub in a fine location, but as mentioned, the ale choice is limited and the more-than-London prices are a deterrent.

Set in the Lewes backstreets The Kings Head is a pleasant traditional pub with several areas around the centrally placed island bar.There were three cask beers on offer, a couple from Harveys as you would expect, Old Ale and Sussex Best along with Gun Scaramanga, the Old was very good. A pleasant pub I'd have no problem returning to.

Visited 14/03/25. Visited previously on 07/07/20. Was oft visited in the period before you could drink inside venues in both lockdowns as there is a nice public garden nearby where take-away pints were taken and I am thinking I have never actually had a drink inside here previously! Cask was the Old Ale and Sussex Best from Harvey's and the Project Babylon Pale Ale from Gun. Keg was Staro, Guinness, Aspall, Moretti, Peroni, Amstel, Neck Oil and the Alpacalypse from Salt. This is a decent corner pub slightly away from the main stretch of pubs on the High St. On this occasion the front part was a bit rowdy with lads having their post working week pints so not that enjoyable on my visit, so I moved on after my quick pint of Harvey's. Corner entrance info to a bare boarded front part with the bar counter an island affair in the centre part of the front of the venue. The fire just inside the entrance wasn't lit on what felt like a mild early spring evening. There are some red velvet banquettes serving a couple of tables just inside the entrance and on the right-hand side of the bar, with some tall tables to the right rear part of this front section. The bar counter on the left-hand side offered the same keg beers and a few chaps were perched on stools in that part with some regular tables and chairs at the front part of that side. The middle section of the pub up a couple of steps had some seating either side and which was occupied by diners on my visit. The garden, not examined by me tonight, was through a door on the left-hand side mid venue and there was a rear further raised area at the back with a large table occupied by a single group of diners on my visit. Walls are adorned with a multitude of framed photos and prints.
