The Black Horse, Brighton

112 Church Street was previously known as The Black Horse before unimaginatively being renamed to its address. There are a couple of small tables outside the front on the path and an extensive menu is displayed in the window with food ranging from baguettes for £5 to curries and traditional pub food for £7/8. Inside this L shaped pub is a bar on the left past some seating by the front windows and a larger seating area at the rear. There is a ‘secret’ beer garden out the back that has some more seating and a small Pimms tent to shield the smokers from the elements. There is a fireplace on one of the brick walls which led me to believe that this outside space was in fact a room that has been demolished. Back inside the pub there are a coupe of plasma screens that were showing the British Comedy Awards. There was no background music due to the awards ceremony being aired, but there were some advertisements for regular cabarets on Friday nights. I found the service to be friendly and the Guinness was on good form. Three hand pumps are on the bar, but two of these were unused leaving only Pride along with some standard draught products and Amstel. I prefer a more traditional pub and cabaret isn’t really my thing so I doubt that I’ll return.
