The Chintz Symposium in Falmouth

Does what it says on the tin. Not easy to find - keep going past other Mews outlets and up some slippery (marble?) steps. To be sure there’s all sorts of stuff and they've made a big effort to decor the eaves as well. It’s an inverse L shaped interior with a quasi-conservatory off right and also a pair of comedy snugs with sliding doors, again very chintz. Smelt of joss sticks, with Curtis Mayfield on the stereo. Gents toilets are not in the pub, they are back down the stairs and are beautifully tiled. No cask but a small and useful keg selection, my Verdant Light Bulb was very tasty and I reckon Alan Winfield might have been able to tolerate it. If you're doing Falmouth for a day this should be on your list; it’s far removed from the Hand Bar which used to occupy the site.

Primarily an hotel and buffet restaurant, this large mock Tudor roadside inn feels more like a chain pub than a local. It's run by Mitchell and Butler, and it's one of their budget establishments. Food is served all day from either the open buffet or at the table from a laminated menu. There is a single U-shaped bar formed from rooms with different floor levels conjoined during the recent refurbishment, with huge TV screens showing live sports. There are noisy gaming machines. Everything feels cheap, apart from the drinks which are overpriced for the area. No real ale, so the Punk IPA is the best choice. Other keg offerings were Madri, Peroni, Carling, Coors, Asahi, Strongbow, Guinness and John Smiths. Not a destination of choice.

The company was formed in 1967 by the merger of Charrington United Breweries and Bass Mitchells & Butlers. Creating the largest brewing group in the UK. A position it would retain until it eventually sold up. They started the decade with a bewildering array of breweries, some quite small and ....
