Located just outside the town walls, in fact immediately opposite the one remaining arch, I initially thought that this was closed having wandered past earlier in the day with no sign of life, but subsequently found it open on the evening. With no sign of any food being offered, and perhaps more of a wine bar vibe than a pub, I suppose perhaps it does not really lend itself to daytime opening.

Internally it’s one single L-shape room with large windows to let in plenty of natural light. Décor wise it’s fairly rustic, with varnished wooden boards on the floor, one or two very old looking supporting timbers and duck egg blue paintwork on much of the walls. The bar counter extended around the inner leg of the room and this was also clad in rough wooden boards. Seating was a mixture of regular table and chairs, bar stools both at the bar counter and in the window, and further furniture that looked as though it may have been fashioned from old cable reels or something similar. A few potted plants and fairy lights were in the window, and a large TV screen at the rear was showing the Six Nations, which seemed a little out of place with the rest of the pub. Fortunately the volume was off so this was not too intrusive.

Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap, although they did have Harvey’s Wharf IPA and Gamma Ray on keg. Even worse though, there were no ciders on tap. Overall, whilst not at all unpleasant, I didn’t really warm to this place. There are far better options nearby.

A single room new bar that opened in Hastings in November 2019, unfortunately just before covid. It sits on the junction of Tower Street and Landgate and must appear in many people’s photos of the Landgate Arch.
Ales were originally from bottles in the fridge only but there is now four keg taps on the bar dispensing Beavertown Neck Oil and a keg version of Harvey’s Sussex Best alongside Guinness and Birra Moretti. I went for a 12oz Schooner of the Neck Oil at a pricey £4.00.
Aimed at a younger demographic than me and I only visited for research purposes, and with the Waterworks just along Tower Street I will leave this one to the beautiful people in future.
