Now renamed Bailey's and according to their website it is "nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales", which is the sort of estate agent-cum-holiday home nonsense that really gets my back up. I wish them well in their new venture. Finishing touches were being put to the front of the building when I was here, and a poster advertising for staff was in the window, so it will be open soon, I expect.

Pleasant enough café bar type place that does a couple of cask ales. At the time of my visit these were Hetton Pale Ale and Blonde Beauty, both by Dark Horse Brewery. The Blonde Beauty set me back £2.10 for a half, and was OK if a little uninteresting. There were a few keg taps, including Beavertown Neck Oil, premium lagers and a couple of ciders. A separate Guinness tap was partially hidden off to the left hand side of the bar.

Sydney's has been well described previously, but on entering there is a small room in front of the bar with several tables and chairs, a further seating area off to the right, and what looked like another room behind the bar. There was a family in having a meal, a couple of older gents enjoying a pint, and another couple of people in looking for food so there was a reasonable atmosphere and didn't feel like I was in a dentist's waiting room. The front room has bare boards, bare stone walls and big exposed beams.

Service felt a little robotic, but not unfriendly.

I don't think I would be that fussed about coming back but it was interesting to try. Probably the kind of place I would drag the family on a day out for something to eat just so I had an excuse to investigate the ales! I imagine it gets very busy during peak tourist season and school holidays.

With a narrow frontage, this one is bigger than expected, with a second room to the right having two entrances. The decor changes from bare stone walls to plaster and subtle blue paint at this point, and the furniture is similarly smarter and more suited to dining than casual drinking. The bar counter at the rear has three hand pumps, which had Settle Ribblehead Bitter and Timothy Taylor Landlord on at the time of my mid-afternoon visit - I was the only customer, with lunch service having ended at around 2pm. The Ribblehead was in excellent condition, and I took my drink to the more comfortable seats in the dining area as I didn't much fancy the low stools. This is a not very pub-like bar, not helped by the absence of other customers, but I imagine there's more of an atmosphere in the evening and I would have no problem about returning.
