I had arranged to meet my daughter and her husband here for lunch. They were house hunting in the area and they had a slot for me between viewings. It's hard to discern the original pub amid the additions and alterations made by Brunning & Price and their architects. Clearly the entrance was originally opposite the church, but now of course everyone enters from the car park; or should that be car parks in the plural, as it is on several terraced levels and must have required some very hard work on someone's part.

I was glad my daughter had made a booking, as it was very busy. I can't remember what we had to eat, but I went for the Purple Moose Elderflower Ale, which was OK (NBSS 3). The other six beers - a varied offering - were as in my photos. (Maybe the beer would have been in better nick if there had been three or four rather than seven on the bar?) After lunch we went for a walk around the village and called back in for a coffee as it had started to rain. Having lost our table we sat on a terrace, gazing out upon a now sodden Welsh pastoral landscape.

I'm not sure that this chain's pubs are designed with me in mind, and luckily the house hunters found somewhere to live which is far enough away so that I do not have to call in here again.

Set on a Welsh B road, that would be more akin to a narrow country lane in England, this is a most unusual location for a Brunning & Price pub.

Set on a hillside, the car park is spread over 3 levels, with steep climbs to each successive level. The number of cars and the number of people sat outside concerned us a little, as we were worried that they would not be able to accommodate some drinkers.

We needn't have worried, as this place is deceptively large. In addition to the large outdoor space, there is plenty of space over a number of different areas indoors. Toilets are upstairs and there is even a lift.

We were actually offered a choice of seating, including one rather large table surrounding a well.

Staff did seem to be a bit disorganised. There were plenty of them, but they took their time in taking our order. Phoenix Brunning & Price Original & Timothy Taylor Boltmaker are the mainstays. Guests were Tomos & Lilford Summerhouse, Tudor Blorenge & Purple Moose Elderflower Ale & Snowdonia Ale.

Food certainly dominates here. But what I like about Brunning & Price pubs is that drinkers are still made to feel welcome. This was another unexpected find for this area and the views from the pub alone are worth the effort of seeking it out.
