Tucked away along a quiet corner of the Hertford Union Canal, this is a pleasant cafe bar that was strangely empty on my mid-week evening visit. You enter into a reasonable sized rectangular room with a skimmed floor, large windows along the front wall and a dark colour scheme throughout including black walls, pillars and floor. Furniture is mixed, but includes some orange padded banquettes, multi-coloured high stools and plain wooden chairs, all of which really pop against the aforementioned dark background. The ceiling has the usual ugly industrial aesthetic and I noticed some cheap wood had been used to clad some of the walls and bar counter, although they had at least tried to form them into a nice geometric design rather than just nailing a bunch of chipboard to everything. Lots of potted plants brighten the space and add to the cafe vibe, whilst other quirky bits of decor include the muted light fittings, bookshelves and a great many photos on one of the walls. The bar, running along the back wall, has some nice modern shelves and mirrors on its bar back and there was a kitchen out the back somewhere churning out food from a pie and mash themed menu. A few canal-side seats can be found outside in a covered decked area.
There were six craft keg taps on the bar, half of which were out of action when I arrived. I forget what I ended up with, but it was a reasonable beer from one of the many local microbreweries, at a price commensurate with the other bars of Hackney Wick.
This is a nice enough place, which I clearly didn’t see at its best, given that I was the only customer. Despite the cafe feel, it didn’t strike me as somewhere particularly food-led and instead seemed like somewhere you could settle down for a few drinks, although the lack of cask and focus on expensive craft keg will put some people off. I found the whole enterprise fine but relatively unremarkable and would more likely stick to the nearby brewery taprooms when I’m next in the area.

A swift walk from Hackney Wick Overground, this is located either through the narrow White Post Lane, or, as per below, via the canal path that separates this from Fish Island. A reclamation of an old industrial unit, this is rather sparse inside decor-wise, although some interior curios include Haynes manuals stacked up above the bar and another manual appropriated as a shelf. We encountered this before a West Ham match (the stadium is a mere 5 minute walk away) and the space was divided into two rooms - a bar area to the left and larger, open space to the right, which, on this occasion, had a large pull-down screen showing an early PL game. A narrow decking out front offers a view of the canal and new Fish Island apartments which have sprung up - match days also include the infamous Rib Man whose "Holy F**k" hot sauce isn't to be taken lightly. Beers appear to be all keg - a couple from Truman's as you'd expect included Pale Ale and a very good Roller IPA, which, despite being a fizzer, hit the spot.

A hipster hangout ,and difficult to find, your best bet maybe to use the entrance from the canal towpath on the Hertford Union Canal. It's trendy ,on the ground floor of a modern block, but fitted out as if it were a squat, with lots of rough wood ,metal furniture and a bohemian atmosphere.Open from 8am for coffee and bagels,it operates as a bar late into the evening and has live music and a monthly quiz. You may need a beard to enter !
Keg and bottles beers, eclectic food and a pleasant canalside terrace behind an austere security fence.
