Morgan's Bar, Weston Super Mare

A prominent bar on Weston’s revamped sea front and located directly opposite the entrance to the pier, we were surprised to find it open on a recent Sunday afternoon visit, having tried to get it on numerous occasions previously, even at the height of summer, only to find it closed.

Inside it’s all one open plan room, although broken up a little with pillars and low walling in places. Windows along the front give good views out over the promenade, and there were some stools to sit here and make the most of the view, but it was predominantly either Chesterfield sofas or cream padded bench seating to sit on. The flooring was some attractive slate style tiles, although at the rear was an illuminated disco floor, the like of which I’ve not seen since I watched Saturday Night Fever. The ceiling was a very jazzy, an almost psychedelic black and white pattern, whilst maroon paintwork was on the lower part of the walls, although in places they also had sculptured plasterwork made to look like rippled sand dunes which was an unusual touch. There were a few TV screens dotted around showing a music channel, although the volume fortunately was at a low background level, at least on our visit. Various blue LED rope lights were strung around, and an old bicycle was hung on the wall in one corner. A selection of filled rolls were on the bar counter, and a quick glance at the menu showed a rather unappetising selection of burgers and so on.

Unfortunately there were no real ales on tap, or much in the way of any beer at all come to that, with Worthington Creamflow being the sole offering, if you can really count that as a beer. Ciders fared a little better with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze and Strongbow. All in all, this didn’t really do it for me, with little in the way of any charm or ambience and a very limited drinks selection.
