Renamed and extensively refurbished since my previous review, it’s now quite unrecognisable from it’s biker friendly days and is clearly aiming at a very different clientele. In fact it seems quite classy in appearance, which doesn’t really suit the Weston demographic I would have thought, and perhaps explains why it was virtually deserted on our recent Thursday evening visit. It also appears quite food focused, with the pub’s strapline, Woodfired Kitchen, being etched on many of the windows and the door. Most, if not all of the tables laid up for dining, although nobody actually was as far as I could see.

Internally it’s one single, open plan room, with a curved bar counter to the left. Some sort of plasticky looking wood effect laminate was on the floor and there was much use of Farrow & Ball shades of paintwork on the panelled walls, making it look quite elegant. The majority of the seating was velour style arm chairs, along with some unusual brass framed ones that you sat in, rather than on. Some very large floral garlands were arranged at the front of the pub, and a small wood burning stove with an adjacent pile of logs was off to one side. Unusual large silver egg shaped lamps hung above the bar, whilst subtle red strip lighting ran along the top of the bar front.

Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap, with Neck Oil being the sole keg offering. Ciders fared little better with just Inch’s Medium Apple. Overall, this was quite a pleasant joint if you wanted a bite to eat and the young barmaid was very friendly, but as a pub it really falls woefully short.

A good sized and popular biker’s pub located just opposite Dolphin Square. The interior décor is basic and a little dated with predominantly cream paint, red detailing and rough wooden flooring. There are murals of various bikes below the bar, and further drawings up above.

It’s one big open L-shape inside with a raised area at one end used for various band nights, a pool table and a couple of other smaller, raised areas offering some comfier seating. The music policy seems to be predominantly metal – there were various flyers on the wall detailing upcoming bands from this genre, and that was also predominantly the music that was playing in the background. Most of the punters, and the landlord, looked to be of the biker / metal variety. One particularly rotund, and folicly challenged gentleman sported a t-shirt with the slogan Machine F******* Head emblazoned all over it (my asterisks, not his!).

The solitary cask ale on offer was Directors, although there was also Courage Best on keg. There were several ciders though, namely Strongbow, Blackthorn, Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Dry. Overall, I quite like this pub and may try and get down for some of their gigs – an up and coming “Napalm Death Metal” night sounds appealing! But it’s obviously not going to suit everyone, and the lack of beer choice is a little disappointing.

Wicked pub with a mixed bag of bands regularly playing blues, rock, punk, Ska, metal...you name it, they get the bands in! The Directors is always a lovely pint and kept well. The landlady would be mortified to read herself described as a metaller! Weston bike night is held almost every Thursday in the summer months and there's usually a band on and great homecooked food available. Locals are a friendly bunch, despite some appearances (mostly me!) and you can relax or dance the night away, whichever you prefer. The juke box has every type of music on you could ever imagine and the pool table is often free during the week. I rarely use any other pub in Somerset. Bike parking right outside the pub, and a carpark too, on Carlton Street which is open as usual, despite town centre renovations. Pop by, you'll be pleasantly surprised! Missy Jones.
