London road Alehouse is a shop converted rectangular bar with a central high bench and table that is backed by some square hanging stained glass screens that separate the high tables in the bar area to the right from the seating to the left. Noting the high backed leatherette chairs in white and black I wasn’t surprised to learn that there is a Thai kitchen attached, so bar to right and dining to left. The back bar supports six hand pumps, I went for the Dovedale which wasn’t great. After glugging some back the governor came over and apologised as one of his regulars had pointed out that it had gone. So my just about passable pint was replaced without me actually asking. I ended up with a very nice pint of Mobberley IPA. I spotted a piano and was asked to join the 8pm Tuesday quiz that was just about to start, which I appreciated. Although, I’m glad I declined as I didn’t have a clue for the first five questions that were read out before I left. This is a welcoming place and worth a look if in the area.

Luckily for us we were in Penkhull, so it was an easy ten minute walk down the hill to get to here. The pub was quiet on arrival so we had an interesting chat with the very knowledgeable barman, who was quite happy to give out a few tasters. One of these was the Dark Star Crème Brulee, which was superb. I settled with a pint of Tiny Rebel Moustache, which was outstanding and I also had a very good pint of the Heritage Tremendous. This pub also had a very extensive collection of Belgian beers which are all found in catalogue format on the tables. A few of the locals popped in, whilst we were still here and one of them brought in a massive pizza and offered it around.

Housed in a converted shop in a small parade, the 'telephone box' door is the thing to look out for as you approach. Nicely done interior, with the square room partially sub-divided by a central screen. Mostly rustic furniture and decor, with the little chessboard table by the window being an interesting touch. Having only just opened-up when I stopped by, I had a good chat with the friendly landlord as he got things ready for the day. My pint of Ludlow Black Knight (one of four real ales available from the six handpumps) was in good shape, and there are also eight craft taps and a selection of bottled beers too.
