A slightly peculiar Spoons in a grand building, which retains individual rooms off the main front section which contains the bar. I might have just been unlucky but I found a queue of 8 people waiting to be served, with just one hapless bar person. The kitchen seemed to be struggling with food orders also. I eventually achieved a reasonable Exeter Darkness, with the other guests being Otter Bright and Theakston's Atlantic Red. I might rate it higher if they got their act together,

A Wetherspoons in a converted 18th Century building, this is slightly unusual inasmuch as the bar is immediately to your left on entry facing outwards. It's a bit of a warren inside with rooms left, right and centre, but as noted below, it's a rather relaxing version of the chain. There's some nice Georgian-style wood panels and faux, empty frames on the walls, although the ambience was broken by two small children running around unsupervised. Curmudgeon hat off, the ale team sheet comprised Sharp's Doom Bar, Ruddles Best, Westerham Spirit of Kent, Abbot Ale, Evan Evans Warrior and Naylor's Black and Tan, doubled up over two banks. My Westerham was decent enough, but it's difficult to complain after being charged £1.85 for a pint. One of the better Spoons - the absence of the daytime brigade being the main selling point.

This is a newer (Nov 2013) Spoons and is a lot different to the identikit shop conversions from the earlier JDW days. Externally it's a large red brick block that looks kike it could have been a library or some other public building. It's listed and in fact was once a library but also a social club before JDW spent 1.4 million creating this. Inside it is a large high ceilinged open plan room with the bar on the street side of the building and split into various areas including a lower level room to the right as you enter.
There is the usual assortment of tables and chairs but it all seems a bit plusher and spacious than normal. The furniture isn't all crammed in close together as it is in some Spoons. On the bar there are two banks of six hand pumps which on my Spring Festival visit had Ruddles doubled up, Abbot, Doom Bore and eight festival beers. I went For Shepherd Neame Boadicea and Elgood's Spring Challenge (£2.29). Although both were in good nick, the Boadicea was rather cold probably meaning a thermostat needs adjusting on the right hand set of pumps.
All in all I quite liked this one, it's a much more relaxing place than for example, the one in Letchworth.
